A defining facet of the 21st century in India is that women are making a mark in business domains that were earlier considered male bastions. Meet Pooja Bhargava, director of Amitek Infra Pvt Ltd, a firm that specialises in electronic security, manufacturing and exporting road marking materials, construction chemicals and allied products. Pooja joined the company 6 years back and in a short span of time she has built the firm’s export division. In the past 5 years, the company has witnessed a growth of 300% and the export division accounts for nearly 80% of the company’s turnover.
Pooja Bhargava (Pooja) shares her export journey in conversation with GlobalLinker (GL).
GL: Tell us about your export journey.
Pooja: Amitek is a decade-old brand in the field of electronic security and building automation with specialisation in manufacturing of road marking products, thermoplastic signages, construction chemicals and allied products. Amitek is an ISO 9001 certified company and has a state-of-the art manufacturing plant in Rajasthan. I joined the business 6 years back and we started exporting in 2015, although the groundwork started earlier. Our road marking products are exported to several countries including Singapore, South Africa, China and Bangladesh.
GL: What challenges have you faced in exporting?
Pooja: The toughest competition that we face is from Chinese manufacturers. Their production costs are lower than ours because of their larger size and domestic policies. Also, even with high value export orders, it is challenging to get working capital financing without collaterals.
GL: What has been your success mantra in exports?
Pooja: I think export is all about consistent efforts in a planned direction. Selection of markets should be based on sound logic and thorough analysis of the importer’s market. The biggest asset in exports is product quality. It is important to constantly upgrade your product as per market needs, trends and standards. Knowledge of export laws is a must. Good communication skills are an advantage. Apart from these factors, family support is also very important. My husband has played a vital role in supporting me in my professional and personal life. Having a business mentor has also benefitted me.
GL: What is your big business dream?
Pooja: My dream is to be a recognised global brand.
GL: What is your advice to aspiring exporters?
Pooja: When entering the export market, one should be aware of all technical aspects and country specific market access requirements. Having a digital presence is important. While selecting buyers one should be careful of the documentation, payment terms and delivery specifics.
