Mother’s Day is being celebrated on May 13 in India. This Mother’s Day we have member Geeta Saini writing about the nature of the maternal bond and what her mother has meant to her. Take a moment and reflect on the role your mother has had in shaping your personal and professional life.
A maternal bond is a deeply significant relationship between a mother and her child. While typically associated with pregnancy and childbirth, a maternal bond may also develop in cases where the child is unrelated, such as an adoption.
But it’s true that whenever we talk about ‘maata-pita’ or ‘mom and dad’, usually, the word ‘mother’ comes first. The concept of ‘ladies first’ has also originated from here I believe.
The role of the mother in our lives is always unique and precious when compared to other relationships. We are truly loved and cared for by our mothers, every moment of our existence. She seldom wants anything in return from her children. Instead she loves unconditionally, with an open heart. We as children also love and care for her from our heart, but our love cannot be compared with hers. A mother is unique in this world. She is like a living goddess who always takes all the pains of her child and gives love and care in return.
She is the one who spends sleepless nights nursing her children through any sickness and other difficult times. She is an integral part of all happy moments and understands her child’s likes and dislikes. She always guides us to march ahead on the correct path and do the right things in life. She is our first teacher who teaches us at every step of life. She teaches us to be disciplined, behave in a well-mannered way and makes us understand our roles and responsibilities towards family, society and the nation.
My mother and I
My mother was a very special lady who did all that I have described above. A small anecdote about her. She was contacted by All India Radio, when she was in Lahore, pursuing her graduate studies. She had a melodious voice and a calm attitude. We lost her at a very early stage, so the value of our memories is immeasurable. Thinking of her gives me a sense of peace and that sense of peace is the essence of life.
Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love. I will always love her, and she cared for me till her last breath. I will love her till my last breath as well and carry on her legacy in my life.
