All of us want to be very good at whatever we do. When things are going well, we are happy. But when things don’t go according to plan, we feel stuck. We feel like progress is not happening.
Whenever we look to do anything, there are four steps we always go through.
Step 1: We don’t know what needs to be done, and we look to someone or something to tell us what to do.
Step 2: We know what needs to be done
Step 3: We do it
Step 4: We do the task well in the way it is supposed to be done.
I have this mental model. Whenever you feel stuck, try to figure out which of the first three steps you are feeling stuck at.
You often get stuck or feel stuck because you don’t know what needs to be done. This means you are stuck at the first step itself. The way to get out of this situation is to go out and seek help. Ask help from folks who know better and can guide you. Try not to waste too much energy trying to figure out what needs to be done on your own. Taking help is easier.
You may know what needs to be done, but you are still stuck. This is a problem in step two. You are stuck maybe because you don’t have time or resources. To deal with this scenario, you have to be resourceful, having your wits around you to overcome the limitations you face.
The more difficult situation is when you have done something, and you still feel stuck. You have taken all the necessary actions, but it’s not yielding the results you are looking for. Whatever you are doing seems to be in vain. In these situations, you have to get hungry and seek feedback. It could be your customers, partners, friends, family -anyone who matters who can tell you what you may not want to hear about what you are not doing correctly. If you listen carefully, you will find insights that will help you figure out what you can change in your actions.
When you manage your first three steps well, you will find yourself getting to step four and doing a great job at whatever you undertake.
